This committee of the North Carolina Synod assists the synod in preserving and utilizing its heritage as it carries out its mission as a part of the one holy, catholic, andapostolic Church. The committee supports the work of the synodical archivist in arranging for the collection of historical materials from the synod itself, its committees and organizations, as well as its congregations, and in transferring such materials to the North Carolina Synod Archives in Columbia, South Carolina. There, as a part of the ELCA Region 9 Archives, the materials are processed, catalogued and made available to users through the James R. Crumley Jr. Archives (Telephone 803-786-5150). The committee is also responsible for the production and distribution of historical materials that tell the story of how God has used and is using this historic synod, its congregations, institutions and agencies, in sharing the good news and in nurturing those who respond to the Gospel in faith. To this end, the committee published in 1994 a narrative history of the synod, ALL ONE BODY: THE STORY OF THE NORTH CAROLINA SYNOD, 1803-1993, and in 2001 issued LIFE SKETCHES OF LUTHERAN CLERGY, NORTH CAROLINA SYNOD, EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH IN AMERICA, 1773-1999, a volume of brief, biographical sketches of the hundreds of ordained men and women whose names have appeared on the clergy roster of this synod. A volume of historical sketches of the many congregations that have been related to the synod over the years is now in preparation, and like ALL ONE BODY and LIFE SKETCHES, when issued may be purchased at the synod's office building, 1988 Lutheran Synod Drive, Salisbury, NC 28144; telephone 704-633-4861. The committee is also happy to make available in a two volume, hardback edition the diaries of Pastor Samuel Rothrock (1809-1894) who was a prominent leader in the synod during years that spanned the Civil War and Reconstruction. Through the generosity of the author, the committee is also now able to fill orders for the recent study of union congregations researched and written by B. William Cruse, Jr. If you have or need information, or have questions for the committee or a committee member, contact the chair.
