1. AMEZ, ELCA members hold weekend summit

Members of two Christian denominations, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), got to know one another better during a Summit Weekend, held September 16-17 in Salisbury.

2. Bishop Moyo of Zimbabwe visits synod

Bishop Ambrose Moyo, retired Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Zimbabwe and former head of the Lutheran Communion of Southern Africa, came to the US through the invitation of ELCA Global Mission. He is pictured here with NC Synod Bishop Leonard Bolick making a Skype call to the Ecumenical Committee during a visit on December 8.

3. 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering

Jesus is our peace. In his life and death on the cross, Jesus broke down the dividing walls so that we are no longer strangers and outsiders, but we are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God. The foundation of God’s house was build of apostles and prophets, and Jesus, the cornerstone, holds it all together. (Ephesians 2:14-20 paraphrased)

4. Taking a look at ELCA's Region 9

One of the two ministry emphases highlighted in our synod is that of the ELCA’s Region 9. The Rev. Harvey Huntley, Jr., pictured here in his NC Synod office, is the region’s coordinator. He offers an overview of the region's ministry and describes a current collaboration of Region 9 with the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church in mission and ministry with Native American peoples in our region.

New Peeler/Casey Deadline

In response to a changing economic environment and to maintain credibility of the grant process, Synod Council has changed the grant process for the Michael Peeler Fund and Virginia Casey Fund. In the past, grant requests were accepted twice a year and there was a form for Michael Peeler and one for Virginia Casey. In the future only one form will be used with a deadline of June 30. After review, the Peeler/Casey Committee will determine which fund best fits each request. Grant requests will then be reviewed by the Peeler/Casey Committee and presented with recommendations at the September Synod Council meeting for annual disbursements of funds. The new form will be on the website by the end of the year.
