In the ELCA rostered leaders may receive calls to ministry through congregations, synod councils, or the ELCA Church Council.  While most calls come through congregations, the synod council has issued a number of calls to rostered leaders serving in agencies and institutions such as camps and conference centers (Lutheridge and Agape+Kure Beach), nursing homes and hospitals, counseling centers, schools, and interim ministry settings.  These calls are often for a specific term and may be renewed at the request of the leader and/or the employing agency.

Rostered leaders in ministries of chaplaincy, counseling, or Clinical Pastoral Education may participate in an ELCA endorsement process.
