Once on the Great Sabbath
(before the Passover) the rabbi of Roptchitz came
home from the house of prayer with weary steps.
"What made you so tired?" asked his
wife.
"It was the sermon," he
replied. "I had to speak of the poor and their
many needs for the coming Passover. Unleavened
bread and wine and everything else is terribly
high this year."
"And what did you accomplish
with your sermon?" his wife asked.
"Half of what is needed," he
answered. "You see, the poor are now ready to
take. As for the other half, whether the rich are
ready to give--I don't know about that
yet."

New Year greetings, everyone!
I can hardly believe it's time to
think about Lent. Just in case your
plans aren't already in place, here are some
options for programming, study or
worship.
Blessings to you as you
plan. |

Soup and study anyone? |
|
Lenten
possibilities
On a dark winter night, a hot
bowl of soup pairs quite nicely with a Bible
study on Old Testament figures. Why not try it
using the resource Bread and Broth?
Or how about a wonderful, wet study of the
deep and wide role water plays in God's Word? Use
the Book of Faith resource Lenten Journey:
Water Marks by former seminary professor
Diane Jacobson. It's a seven-week study for
groups with an optional journalling
component.
Maybe a DVD study is more your style. How
about Max Lucado's He Chose the Nails? Or
learn the prayer Jesus prayed--the Shema--using
The Jesus Creed study. Watching
modern-day translations of the parables using the
36 Parables series would be fun for
adults and children. Discuss them
intergenerationally and all will
benefit!
There are many, many more possibilities. Let me help
you find the right study for your
congregation! |

DVDs,
books and
more
These are just a few of the
resources available from the synod's Heilig
Resource Center for use during the season of
Lent.
There are DVD
study series for adults and classic choir
anthems. For kids there are story books, craft
books, and children's sermons. Personal devotion
books round out the list.
Find the
listing on the right side of our Heilig
Resource Center web page.
Of course, most
of the Lenten resources didn't even make the list.

find it! |

the Gospel |

Scripture and hymns
combine
Take a
look at this marvelous plan for singing through the
Gospel of Mark. The Rev. Greg Kaufmann,
Assistant to the Bishop, NW Synod of Wisconsin,
pairs texts from Mark's gospel with hymns from the
ELW to tell the story in a new way. Sing the hymns
alone (with a quick intro for each) and move
through in a little over half an hour. Add the
texts and finish in about an hour.
This
powerful activity has got it all: worship, Bible
literacy, learning, prayer! I was a participant
myself at the Book of Faith Consultation in
Chicago this past fall. (Not just participant but
page-turner-for-the-accompanist. If you decide to
use it, let me know. I have
a few tips for
you!) | | |
