For God’s Work Our Hands Sunday, Community in Christ, Cornelius, partnered with Bags of Hope Lake Norman, assembling 100 food bags for local school children. Bags of Hope, located in Cornelius, is a nonprofit that supplies weekend food bags every Friday to local schools where children have been identified by school counselors as facing food insecurity at home.
Each weekend of the school year, these K-12 students are sent home with a food bag containing 3 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2-3 servings of fruits, 2 servings of vegetables, and 5 snacks. During longer breaks like Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break, students are given larger bags including food quantities that relate to the number of days out of school. Need continues to increase as it nears 1,000 bags distributed every weekend across 34 schools.
A couple of dozen people came early in the morning to set up the tables and set out all the food and labels in the proper places … in addition to breaking down food boxes and recycling! Over 75 people stayed after worship to help feed the need, creating 3 assembly lines labeled in the specific order and quantities laid out by Bags of Hope. After watching an assembly video created for us, everyone joyfully worked side-by-side together to feed our local community! It is likely that these 100 bags will already be in backpacks before this article is sent out!
