Martin Luther believed in the priesthood of all believers, and that vision comes alive in the NC Synod’s Advanced Lay Ministries Program. Since 2016, this vital program has trained and commissioned lay leaders to preach, teach, and serve congregations across the synod—using the gifts of those who once only filled the pews.
Lay Preachers (LP) learn from seminary professors and rostered ministers over the course of eighteen months; topics such as the Old and New Testaments, Lutheran Theology, Preaching, and Worship. Once commissioned, LPs are ready to supply in any congregation within this synod when their regular pastor is on vacation or in sites where there isn’t a called pastor serving.
Synod Authorized Ministers (SAM) must complete the initial coursework for lay preaching and then engage in further education for eleven more months. They learn more about congregational leadership. SAMs are then placed within a specific context—at one particular location—where they will serve as that congregation’s leader.
If you have never utilized a Lay Preacher before, now is the time to give them a try. They bring fresh insights and experiences into our congregations. They just might be the breath of fresh air you and your people need. As a rostered minister, you can leave your church in good hands, knowing our Lay Preachers have the skills and abilities to lead your people in worship.
Is someone in your congregation expressing a desire to serve God more deeply? Invite them to consider the Advanced Lay Ministries (ALM) Program.
Are you curious or feeling the call to serve? Applications are open now for new cohorts!
