Bob and Laura Gobble, long-time members of First, Greensboro, became a centenarian couple May 31, 2025, when Laura turned 100 and reached that milestone, joining 102-year-old Bob.

And, they have been married for 79 years as of April 27, 2025, a rare milestone in terms of longevity. The longest recorded marriage is 88 years and 349 days, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Their secret to a long marriage? They credit a strong faith in God, a love of people, and the understanding that people will sometimes disagree.

“We’ve tried to solve our problems before we go to sleep,” Bob said. “If you haven’t resolved it, it will only get bigger overnight.”

Friends and family helped them to celebrate Laura’s birthday at the retirement facility where they live. They never had children of their own, but pictures of children, many now grown, can be found on walls and tables in their apartment.

Many church friends and neighbors, near-daughters and sons to Bob and Laura—along with several virtual grandchildren—help the Gobbles with various needs. When gathered, they all perceive themselves as an extended family with Laura’s and Bob’s great love at the core.

Bob and Laura have called North Carolina home for many years. They joined First Lutheran Church in 1964.

Next milestone? Bob, now the oldest member at First Lutheran, is headed toward 103 on September 25.
