On Sunday August 25, twenty-one volunteers from Advent Lutheran Church in Charlotte held a nonpartisan Voter Information & Registration Drive in the College Downs neighborhood surrounding the church. In addition, we knocked on doors at Robinsdale, a nearby subsidized housing complex.

We gathered immediately after the morning’s worship service, enjoyed snacks, and then put on our voter-themed tee shirts and walking shoes. We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful weather. We approached a total of 270 doors, with approximately 70 opened to us. We left our important voter info on doorsteps when no one answered.

Only a few registration forms were needed because the vast majority of people reported being already registered—but that’s a good thing! In addition, homes with Spanish-speaking residents were identified so that flyers could be left regarding upcoming English classes provided by an Advent member.

Sponsored by Advent’s Social Ministry/Outreach Committee, this GOTV (Get Out The Vote) event demonstrates our commitment to advocacy for voting rights for all eligible citizens.
