My name is Bradley English, and I am the newly appointed LYO Board representative on the North Carolina Synod Council. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of being the only youth participant at the Synod Gathering at Lenoir-Rhyne University.
The theme, “Come and See, Go and Tell,” was woven throughout the worship services, discussions, and presentations. I learned about the work being done across the synod and how congregations are reaching out to their communities. It was inspiring to hear stories of faith, service, and ministry from people who are dedicated to sharing God’s message with others.
Being the only youth attendee gave me a unique perspective. I was able to represent younger members of the church and show that youth voices matter and that young people can play an important role in the future of the church.
During one of the sessions, a leader was presenting a slide show of pictures of all of the amazing ministries and opportunities in our synod. At the end of the presentation, they mentioned how there are plenty of things that they don’t have pictures of. This is truly where I saw God’s love throughout this Gathering!
It was in the moments of conversation with people I had never met before, talking to the ministry partners at the block party, and playing Telestrations with the young adults and synod staff. Also attending the strategic planning session and finding new people to eat with during meal times.
Overall, attending the NC Synod Gathering was a rewarding and memorable experience. Although I was the only youth participant, I felt welcomed, respected, and encouraged throughout the event. The theme, “Come and See, Go and Tell,” challenged me to continue growing in my faith and to share what I have learned with others. I am very grateful for the opportunity and hope that more young people will become involved in future synod events.
Bradley English is a member of Community in Christ, Cornelius, and is the youth representative to synod council. He’s a rising junior at Liberty Preparatory Christian Academy in Mooresville.
